Personal Teaching Philosophy
Painting a mural in South Africa
As an art teacher, it’s my desire for students to appreciate and learn about art. Students should come away from my class with a better understanding of different art forms, including drawing, painting, and ceramics, as well as inventive ways to create art. I want to challenge them to become independent, unbiased thinkers. They should be able to look at a piece of art and form their own opinions and critically analyze it.
I became an art teacher so I could inspire young people in a positive way. I want to broaden their appreciation and understanding of art in an encouraging manner. My hope is to share the love of art that I have been developing since I was young. Knowledge and appreciation of art is something that they will keep with them for a lifetime.
I believe that a good teaching process consists of demonstrations on the use of materials, art history, art discussion, and art production. I do not want to teach coloring book, cut-and-paste projects. Instead, my hope is to teach students to look at their inner selves, with some guidance for direction. As an end result, my students should be able to produce unique and personal artwork that they can be proud of. My teaching style consists of modeling, coaching, and helping students to become independent artists, so they are knowledgeable of art in my class, in their future studies, and in life.
